Social Justice Center, with the support of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Georgia and the European Union, successfully hosted the third stream of the School of Democracy.
The School of Judiciary and Security, held from July 31 to August 4, 2024, provided participants with the opportunity to acquire both academic and practical knowledge about the architecture of the Georgian justice system, the reforms implemented, and the existing challenges. Participants also discussed the challenges of effective judicial control over various sectors of government, including the security sector, and explored potential solutions.
During the first two days of the school, participants, along with speakers, reviewed the architecture of the judiciary system, the role of the courts within the constitutional-legal framework, the existing institutional challenges, and ways to address these challenges.
The third day was entirely dedicated to discussing the challenges faced by the security sector in democratic societies, standards for judicial oversight in this sector, and systemic issues related to secret hearings.
On the final, fourth day, participants listened to presentations on the effectiveness and challenges of constitutional control in Georgia, as well as standards for social and political rights and relevant international mechanisms for their legal protection.
The school's attendees were young researchers interested in justice, democracy, and security issues, as well as undergraduate and graduate students in law and socio-economic sciences.
The series of schools organized by Social Justice Center is ongoing and aim to broaden public discussion on current issues related to democracy, justice and security, as well as social and equality policies, to facilitate active involvement of young people and future professionals in this process, and to share the necessary knowledge and experience with them.
