To support policy advocacy and new practice on the right to the legal capacity for the persons with disabilities

From October 2018, Social Justice Center in cooperation with “Partnership for Human Rights (PHR)”, “Georgian Association of Social Workers (GASW)” and “Global Initiative of Psychiatry – Tbilisi (GIP – Tbilisi)” has launched a project titled “ To support policy advocacy and new practice on the right to the legal capacity for the persons with disabilities “. The project is financed by Open Society Georgia Foundation and aims to reform the implementation of legal capacity and aid social inclusion of the psychosocially and intellectually disabled persons. 

Activities will be carried out in three primary directions in the scope of the project:

  • Eliminating legal and practical barriers to aid the implementation of legal capacity reform. This direction entails carrying out following activities: litigation, organization of meetings in the regions with people with disabilities, creation of the concept paper for the implementation of legal capacity reform, researching human rights of persons with psychosocial and intellectual disabilities
  • Increase support to communities with psychosocial and intellectual disabilities and their family members, which entails, drafting training-modules, organizing trainings for mentioned community, also, creating discussion and advocacy platform.
  • Raise awareness regarding the problems faced by persons with psychosocial and intellectual disabilities through increasing their visibility in the public eye. Mentioned approach entails carrying out trainings for journalists, creating media platforms and mass media products, also organizing public discussions.

Project underlines the importance of involving persons with disabilities (both practitioners and consultants) in project implementation phase. Project team will carry out the activities in close cooperation with international experts and local non-governmental organizations.
