In Strasbourg was held a meeting organized by the Council of Europe about the condition of women’s participation in politics in Georgia.
The meeting was led by Ms Snezana SAMARDZIC-MARKOVIC, Director General of Democracy at Council of Europe. “Women in Local Politics”, the movie created by Human Rights Education and Monitoring Centre (EMC), was presented. Lina Ghvinianidze, the representative of EMC, made a speech about the issue of women’s political participation in Georgia. Mrs. Iruza Kakava (Municipality of Zugdidi) and Mrs. Eva Lomtadze (Municipality of Lagodekhi), the winner deputies in the local-government elections, shared their experience with the participants of the meeting. The event was also attended by invited guests from Deputy Permanent Representative of Georgia to the Council of Europe.
The main outcomes and discoveries of the EMC’s project “Capacity Development of Women Candidates and Elected Officials in Georgia - 2014 Local Elections”, which was implemented with the financial support of the Swiss Confederation and with the technical support of the Council of Europe, was also discussed at the meeting.
In the frameworks of the visit meetings were held with the Mrs Caroline LASEN DIAZ, Head of the Gender Equality Unit at Council of Europe and with Mrs Maria GIANNAKAKI, Member of Committee on Equality and Non-Discrimination of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. The participants of the visit, for the purposes of sharing experiences, also met the local non-governmental organizations working on the issues of the women’s political participation and French female politicians, which have been elected in the local representative bodies at various times.
The representatives of the Council of Europe underlined their will to continue supporting of women’s political participation in Georgia.
