Budget: EUR 21,600

Duration: 2017 Year

Social Justice Center, through the support of Heinrich Boell Foundation South Caucasus Regional Office, is implementing the research project: “Social Protest: Experience and Perspectives”.

The state’s avowed radical deregulation policy has created many and diverse waves of protests in society. Therefore, during the last decade, many social protests and demonstrations took place throughout Georgia, which was largely due to difficult socio-economic background, liberal policy of employment as well as neglecting cultural or environmental issues from the side of accountable officials. Thus, it is important to study and analyze practices of these reactionary protests.

The goal of the project is to examine the discontents that started as a response to the rapid economic growth. The main focus of the research will be avowed social protests that were motivated by the protection of labor rights, environmental issues and cultural preservation during 2010-2016. Within the framework of the project, research publication will be prepared which will try to answer the questions that are directed towards analyzing the originating context and socio-political factors of social protests, the identity of protests, the structure of organization as well as studying the actors that are involved. In addition, the study will identify the resistances and strategies of organization that determined the scale and successfulness of certain protests.

After the completion of the project, knowledge and findings that will be derived from the research study, will be shared with different interested groups, actors that are involved in the process (workers, activists, members of trade union of Georgia), also representatives of civil society and non-governmental organizations, to ensure advocacy of sustainable economic development and involvement of local population in the decision-making process as well as to support democratic forms of participation.

Project duration:January 2017- Novemeber 2017;

Project budget: 21,600 EURO.
