Budget: USD 69,949.61

Duration: 2020-2021 Year

From November of 2020, the Social Justice Center, with the support of the Open society Georgia Foundation (OSGF), is implementing a project titled: "Improving the rights  of employees in the formal and informal sectors."

Labour rights are being violated all across the country. Employees are obliged to work in a hazardous and degrading work environment. In the absence of social protection tools, employed fear the prospect of losing their job in this challenging socio-economic environment and are forced to put up with gross violations of labour rights. Given the low level of organization of workers and large-scale social vulnerability, the state's role becomes even more important in establishing the appropriate legislative and institutional framework to protect labour rights. Nevertheless, both labour law and effective enforcement mechanisms remain a challenge. To this end, the project aims to improve workers' rights conditions in Georgia by monitoring the implementation of the legislation and advocating to support vulnerable groups left beyond the existing policies.

To this end, the project sets out the following objectives:

  • Monitor the effectiveness of Labour Inspection and develop recommendations accordingly;
  • Promoting the improvement of the rights condition of employees in the informal sector;
  • Introduce the findings of the project to the general public and activate worker’s groups by encouraging public discussion.
